Peking University is the first university in China where archaeological education and research were carried out.  In 1922, An Archaeology Research Group was established in the Department of Sinology; in 1952 archaeology as a major was set up in the Department of History.  The history of archaeological research in Peking University is nearly as long as the history of archaeological research in China.  From 1950s, thanks to the unfailing dedication of its faculty, archaeology research and education in PKU have enjoyed continued success; the research group has grown in strength to the School of Archaeology and Museology with fully functioning facilities and has cultivated large numbers of excellent professionals for Chinese archaeology.

Famous archaeologist Prof. K. C. Chang complimented the school, saying that Chinese archaeology was in Peking University.  Although an overstatement, the achievements of the school in Chinese archaeology are acknowledged.
The School has strong scientific research records. The Center for the Study of Chinese Archaeology (CSCA) has been selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the national key research bases for humanities and social sciences.  There are also other important institutions with advanced equipments, include the Center for the Study of Chinese Civilizations of PKU (CSAC), Heritage Management Center of PKU as well as laboratory of Archaeological Science and Conservation.  Through these institutions, the School can organize a series of important research projects in different fields every year and has made great contributions in national projects such as
Recent main academic publications
“Xia-Shang-Zhou Dynasties Chronology Project” and “Origin of Chinese Civilization Project”.
Many faculty members are academic leaders in their perspective fields, which also reflected in their teaching.  At present, the School keeps a close watch on the development in the international archaeological researches, which give an impetus for enhancing the School's scientific research and promoting the new directions in Chinese archaeology.

    International Cooperation
The School makes much account of international academic exchange and has established extensive cooperative relationships with many famous universities and institutes.  The archaeological research is promoted by programs such as scholar exchange and cooperative research projects.
Presently, the international cooperative projects include: “prehistoric culture and environment research at Tangshan site” (French-Chinese), “the excavation and research of Yuchanyan Neolithic cave Site” (American-Chinese), “survey and settlement study of Neolithic Chengdu Plain” (American-Chinese), “investigation of Liangzhu culture’s lithic artifacts” (Japanese-Chinese), “archaeobotany research in lower Yangtze”(Japanese-Chinese), etc.

In 2003, an International Joint Center of Chinese Culture Heritage and Archaeology Research was established in cooperation with University College London (UCL).  From then on, the School sent three graduate students to UCL every year and carried out pioneering researches cooperatively such as “integrated study on natural remains from Tianluoshan site of Hemudu Culture”, “consultative study on the conservation of Niuheliang site group of  Hongshan culture”.
The School also tried every possible way to invite world-renowned archaeologists to give lectures. In the mean time, the school has also sent its faculty members outside the country for short-term visits or international conferences.
In recent years, the School held international conferences nearly twice every year. This made it possible to have a direct and extensive discussion with the archaeologists all over the world on a series of important subjects, such as “the origin of modern humans”, “the origin of agriculture”, “the process of early civilizations”, “Silk road and East-West cultural exchange”.
